Seeing a need for visual art programming during Toronto Pride week, in 2011 I started the 10X10 Photography Project. Now an annual event at the historic Gladstone Hotel, 10X10 celebrates the contributions LGBTQ Canadians have made to the arts.
Each year I ask ten Canadian LGBTQ photographers to each take ten portraits of queer Canadians in the arts. The 100 portraits are exhibited and a book is published to accompany the exhibition.
The 2017 photographers include (top l-r) Steven Beckly, Patrick Biller, Kristy Boyce, Ali J Eisner, Elwood Jimmy, (bottom l-r) Samson Learn, Maggie Leighton, Celina Verani, Lulu Wei, and Gabrielle Zilkha here.
Now in its seventh year, I have worked with 70 Queer Canadian photographers, and we have collectively captured portraits of 700 LGBTQ Canadians in the arts. If you would like a complete list of subjects to date, you can find one here.
If you would like to nominate an LGBTQ Canadian for a portrait or a photographer for this project, please submit it here.
